The earthquake, which struck on a fateful Friday night, has left a lasting scar on the country, with over 2,800 lives lost, countless individuals still missing, and many suffering from injuries.
Despite tireless efforts by rescue teams from Spain, Britain, Qatar, and Morocco, the search for survivors remains a challenging and harrowing task. The rugged terrain and severely damaged roadways have posed significant obstacles, impeding the progress of rescue operations.
The village of Tinmel bore the brunt of the earthquake’s fury, leaving numerous residents homeless and iconic landmarks, including the historically significant 12th-century Tinmel Mosque, severely damaged. Desperation continues to grip survivors, many of whom are seeking shelter in courtyards and streets, with tent camps set up by authorities to provide refuge for the displaced.
In response to the crisis, King Mohammed VI has taken decisive action by establishing a relief commission to ensure the equitable distribution of aid to those in need. The province of Al Haouz is among the hardest-hit areas, with nearly 1,500 lives lost and countless more struggling to cope with the aftermath.
Morocco’s armed forces have mobilized teams to provide essential provisions such as clean drinking water, food supplies, tents, and blankets to the affected communities. The recovery process promises to be long and challenging, as the nation grapples with the emotional and physical toll of this unprecedented disaster.
The earthquake’s epicenter, located near the historic city of Marrakesh, a UNESCO World Heritage site, resulted in extensive damage to cherished buildings, deepening the tragedy.
