In Match No-9 of the ICC World Cup held at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, India clashed with Afghanistan in a day-night encounter. Afghanistan won the crucial toss and elected to bat first, setting the stage for an enthralling cricket contest.
Afghanistan faced an early setback, losing their first wicket with the scoreboard reading 32. The struggles continued as they lost their second and third wickets at a total of 63 runs. However, a strong partnership formed between H Shahidi and A Omarzai, bolstering the Afghan innings with an impressive 121 runs. This resilient partnership was eventually broken by India’s Hardik at a score of 184. The Afghan batsmen displayed sensible play and managed to accumulate a competitive total of 272 runs within their allotted 50 overs. Jasprit Bumrah proved instrumental for India, claiming 4 wickets during his 10-over spell.
India began their chase in the second half, with a significant target ahead of them. Ishan Kishan, known for his aggressive play, balanced his approach by rotating the strike effectively. On the other end, Rohit Sharma had different plans, showcasing his prowess as a standout performer. The Indian captain achieved a remarkable half-century in just 30 balls and went on to score the fastest century by an Indian player in a World Cup match. The opening duo of Rohit and Ishan collectively contributed 156 runs before Ishan was dismissed in the 19th over by Rashid Khan, having scored a valuable 47 from 47 balls.
Virat Kohli then joined Rohit on the field and continued his impeccable form. However, Rohit’s sweep attempt proved unsuccessful as he missed the ball, resulting in his dismissal at an impressive score of 131 runs, with India at 205 runs. Notably, Rohit’s innings included 7 centuries in World Cup matches, marking a historic feat. He also clinched the record for the highest number of sixes in the World Cup.
Shreyas Iyer took the crease alongside Kohli and guided India to a comfortable victory, with India ultimately winning by 8 wickets in just 35 overs. The Indian Captain, Rohit Sharma, was rightly named the Player of the Match for his outstanding performance, notably his brilliant knock of 131 runs that propelled India towards this well-deserved victory.
