Both Kohli and Iyer added 135 runs together to take the score to 227 before Iyer’s departure. Shreyas Iyer scored 77 off 87 balls. Rahul falls shortly , but Kohli continues to hold one end. Surya Kumar Yadav contributes 22 runs from 14 balls, while R Jadeja scores 29 runs from 15 balls.
On the other end Virat Kohli was inching towards his record leveling century on his birthday. Kohli scored his 49th century to equal the record of Sachin Tendulkar. He scored 101 off 121 balls. India posts a total of 326 runs with the loss of 5 wickets, as five out of six South African bowlers took a wicket each. India planned and executed the plan on the ground and did not allow South African to dominate .
South Africa’s Chase
South Africa faces a target of 327 runs in 50 overs, requiring a rate of 6.54 runs per over. De Kock is in good form, and their hopes rest on his shoulders. However, today, Quinton de Kock is dismissed by Siraj in the second over, and South Africa is at 6 for 1.
The South African team must prove their mettle in chasing the score, but India’s bowlers are at their best. Jadeja dismisses Captain Bavuma in the 9th over, and Md Shami takes out Markram. The Eden Gardens pitch favors R Jadeja, who finishes with a remarkable 5 wickets for 33 runs, becoming only the second Indian spinner to achieve this feat in the World Cup, following Yuvraj Singh. Kuldeep later claimed 2 wickets. South Africa is bowled out for just 83 runs in 27.1 overs, registering the lowest total in the World Cup.
Expectations of a nail-biting or competitive match are shattered, as South Africa appears content with merely qualifying for the semifinals. India wins comfortably by a margin of 243 runs, leaving fans delighted but also pondering what could have been if South Africa had played more diligently.
