The campaign kicked off on September 23, featuring rowing and shooting events in the first week. The Indian rowing team outshone their previous performance, collecting 5 medals and showcasing improvement in each event, even though the lure of a gold medal remained unreached. Shooting, a discipline with consistent potential, saw an exceptional surge in this edition of the games. The team improved their medal tally from 9 to an impressive 22, setting a benchmark that motivated the rest of the contingent.
In boxing, despite a few disappointments, the team managed to elevate their tally from 2 medals in the last games to 5 in this edition. Rowing progressed from 3 medals to an impressive 5 medals, while wrestling achieved a doubling of their medal count from the last games, securing 6 medals. Athletics also demonstrated remarkable progress, increasing their medal count from 20 to 29, including gold medals in javelin throw by both women and men, a 1-2 finish in javelin, and outstanding performances by athletes like Avinash Sable and Parul Chaudhary.
In the field events, Tejinder Pal Toor’s last throw in shot put secured a gold medal, while both men’s and women’s long jump and the relay 4x400m mixed, men, and women events all contributed to the medal tally. Equestrian made history by clinching a gold in dressage team and a bronze in the individual category. Table tennis witnessed a historic achievement as the Mukherjee pair secured a bronze medal after defeating a Chinese pair in the quarter-finals. Lawn tennis shined with a gold in the mixed pair event featuring veteran Bopanna and Bhosale.
Archery made waves by securing 5 gold medals, making a significant mark by halting the dominance of South Korea. Key archers like Jyothi Surekha Vennom and Ojas Deotale showcased exceptional performance, each earning three gold medals. Badminton saw the duo of Satwiksairaj and Chirag reach the pinnacle of their performance, clinching the gold. The team events, including the Indian women’s cricket team, Indian men’s cricket team, India men and women’s kabaddi teams, and the Indian men’s hockey team, all secured gold medals. The Indian women’s hockey team also achieved a commendable bronze.
Canoe sprint, chess, cricket, golf, and roller skating contributed to the medal tally in this edition, contrasting with the absence of medals in the last games.
