National Current Affairs

1. Centre Holds Talks with Gorkha Leaders: Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a meeting with senior Gorkha leaders to discuss a resolution to the long-standing Gorkha issue.

• The issue primarily concerns the demand for Gorkhaland or an appropriate autonomous political arrangement in the Nepali-speaking hill areas of northern West Bengal, particularly Darjeeling and Kalimpong.

2. Imphal–Dimapur–Guwahati Transport Link Restored: Public transport on NH-2 continued smoothly for the second day. More than 200 passengers travelled from Imphal using four buses and six Winger vehicles.

3. National Teachers’ Awards 2026: 48 school teachers will receive the National Teachers’ Award 2026 from President Droupadi Murmu at Vigyan Bhawan on 5 September 2026, National Teachers’ Day.

• Sikkim: Chemistry teacher Sushma Tamang selected for the award.
• Jammu & Kashmir: Mohd Ayaz Raina is the sole awardee from the UT.

4. Rural Entrepreneurship Campaign-II: Ministry of Rural Development launched the second phase of the National Campaign on Entrepreneurship-II under DAY-NRLM. Campaign period: 21 August–21 November 2026.

5. Gender-Sensitive Police Training: A specialised workshop on gender-sensitive policing and investigation of crimes against women was held in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Organised jointly by NCW, Maharashtra Women & Child Crime Prevention Wing and the Police Commissionerate.

6. West Bengal Anti-Extortion Helplines: Four toll-free numbers were launched:

Defence Update

1. Indigenous AK-203 Production: India reportedly manufactured and test-fired its first fully indigenous AK-203 assault rifle at the Korwa facility, Amethi.

2. India–UK Defence Consultative Group: India and the UK held the 25th Defence Consultative Group meeting. Discussions covered joint R&D, defence-industrial cooperation, military engagement and Indo-Pacific security under India–UK Vision 2035.

3. Quantum-Secure Military Communication: DRDO successfully completed military field trials of an indigenous fibre-based Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) system.

• Partners included Taqbit Labs, IIT Delhi, IISc Bengaluru and IIT Jodhpur.

4. First Baaz Drone Battalion: Indian Army raised its first Baaz Battalion of sophisticated drones in Punjab.

5. IAF International Exercises: IAF concluded participation in Exercise Pitch Black 2026 in Australia and Exercise Udara Shakti 2026 in Malaysia.

6. Anti-Submarine Warfare Craft: Cochin Shipyard delivered Mangrol, the third of eight indigenously designed Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts, to the Indian Navy. It is intended for low-intensity maritime operations and search-and-rescue missions.

International Current Affairs

1. India–Russia Strategic Engagement: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is scheduled to visit Russia on 23–24 August. He will co-chair the 27th India–Russia Inter-Governmental Commission (IRIGC-TEC).

2. UP–Japan Cooperation: Uttar Pradesh and Japan’s Yamanashi Prefecture signed multiple MoUs at the UP-Japan Investment Meet 2026. A ₹600-crore fund was announced for Yamanashi-based MSMEs investing in Uttar Pradesh.

Global Geopolitical Developments

1. Iran–US Tensions: Iran stated that the Strait of Hormuz remains closed, while tensions with the US continue.

2. Russia–Ukraine War: Continuing Russian and Ukrainian attacks have caused casualties and infrastructure damage. The conflict remains significant for European security, energy markets and global food supply chains.

3. Developing El Niño: Climate forecasters warned that the 2026 El Niño could become exceptionally strong. Potential impacts include extreme heat, rainfall anomalies, floods and droughts.

4. Ebola Response in Congo: More than 16,000 Ebola vaccine doses have been delivered to Congo amid the outbreak.

5. ESA Astronaut Completes Spacewalk: ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot became the first French woman and second European woman to perform a spacewalk. The EVA lasted 6 hours 23 minutes outside the ISS.

Science & Technology

Quantum Key Distribution (QKD): India’s successful military trials of fibre-based QKD represent an important advancement in quantum-secure communications. QKD uses principles of quantum mechanics to detect attempts to intercept cryptographic keys.

1. Treesa Jolly–Gayatri Gopichand Win World Championship Bronze

• The Indian pair won bronze at the BWF World Championships.
• They became only the second Indian women’s doubles pair to win a World Championship medal, after Jwala Gutta–Ashwini Ponnappa.

2. India Approves 492-Member Asian Games Contingent:

• 265 male athletes
• 227 female athletes
• Athletics: 73 participants

3. Cristiano Ronaldo: Ronaldo scored in his 25th consecutive league season for Al Nassr. His official senior career tally reached 977 goals.

4. Nehru Trophy Boat Race: Aromal Chundan won the 72nd Nehru Trophy Boat Race at Punnamada Lake, Alappuzha. Winning time: 4:23.328.

Important Observance

International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and Its Abolition – 23 August

• Observed to commemorate the 1791 uprising in Saint-Domingue (Haiti), an important event in the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade.
• Indian Constitutional Link: Article 23 prohibits trafficking in human beings and forced labour.
