1. Government to Replace WPI with Producer Price Index (PPI): The Central Government announced plans to gradually replace the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) with the Producer Price Index (PPI).
Why the change?
- WPI mainly tracks bulk goods prices and does not include services.
- PPI will better reflect actual production costs by including sectors like IT, logistics, banking, gas, and services.
This move will improve inflation measurement and align India with global standards.
2. Prime Minister Research Chair (PMRC) Scheme Launched: The Ministry of Education launched the Prime Minister Research Chair (PMRC) Scheme 2026 to attract Indian-origin scientists and researchers working abroad back to India.
The scheme will:
- Establish research chairs in IITs, IISc, and Central Universities
- Provide modern laboratories, funding, and research freedom
- Help reduce brain drain in science and technology.
3. CCPA Cracks Down on ‘Dark Patterns’: The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) began action against edtech and e-commerce companies for using misleading digital practices called “dark patterns.”
Examples include:
- Basket Sneaking: Hidden charges added automatically.
- Confirm Shaming: Manipulative messages discouraging users from cancelling subscriptions.
The government stressed that online consent must be clear and voluntary.
4. Delhi Hotel Fire Case: Delhi Police arrested the owner of the Malviya Nagar hotel where a fire killed 21 people, citing poor safety measures and a single exit route.
