
The highly anticipated Asian Games 2022, initially slated for the previous year but rescheduled due to the relentless grip of the pandemic, finally kicked off with grandeur on 23rd September 2023. The honor of officially opening the event was bestowed upon the esteemed Chinese Premier, Xi Jinping, in a dazzling inaugural ceremony held at the Olympic Sports Center Stadium in Hangzhou. This spectacular event paid tribute to China’s rich culture and history, themed around the element of water, and drew participants from 45 nations, coming together in a display of unity and sporting excellence.
Leading the Indian contingent into this prestigious event were Harmanpreet Singh, captain of the Indian Hockey team, and Lovlina Borghohain, a celebrated boxer. With the commencement of the medal campaign on 24th September, India showcased its prowess with the largest contingent in its Asian Games history. On this inaugural day of the medal hunt, India clinched an impressive tally of 3 Silver and 2 Bronze medals.
Indian Duo of Arjun Lal and Arvind singh started the medal hunt by securing second position in the Men’s light weight Double Sculls. In the 10-meter Air Rifle Team event for women, the Indian trio comprising Ashi Chouksey, Mehuli Ghosh, and Ramita displayed exceptional skill and teamwork, securing a well-deserved Silver Medal. Men’s Eight Team events, India added one more Silver to its collection.
In the 10-meter Air Rifle Individual event, Ramita showcased her individual brilliance, earning a Bronze medal for India. Another Bronze came in the Men’s Pair Rowing, with Babu Lala and Lekh Ram contributing to India’s growing medal tally.
Excitement soared as the Indian women’s cricket team triumphed over Bangladesh, securing a place in the finals with a convincing 8-wicket victory. The boxing arena witnessed commendable performances from Nikhat and Preeti Pawar, comfortably advancing to the next round.
The Indian Men’s Football team showcased their prowess by managing a draw against Myanmar, propelling them into the pre-quarterfinals and setting the stage for more thrilling matches in this prestigious sporting extravaganza.
